Inspiration
What does it really mean to be tempted? It is an urge or sense to engage in sinful or improper behavior. It involves something, someone, or an underlying inherent drive to disobey God's moral Law and divine will. Enticements or allurements to harmful patterns of thinking are components of temptation. As we are made of flesh and blood, to be tempted is to be human, and we are all aware that temptation affects us all. Even God, in His fleshy form, was tempted Himself. Jesus was tempted while He was fasting and at His weakest physically. Likewise, to tempt us away from our Lord, Satan sneaks in when we don't expect him and when we have the least strength. A roaring lion never goes for the gazelle at the head of the pack. He settles for the one lagging behind. Little did Satan know, after fasting, Jesus had increased in His spiritual strength (Matthew 4:1-11). This verse reminds us that we must constantly be in the Word, building our spiritual strength, because those who remain faithful to God in the face of adversity and temptation will receive "the crown of life" - an abundant life both on this side of eternity and in heaven. When Satan tried to quote scripture to Jesus, Jesus quoted the Bible right back! In times of temptation, the Deceiver will make things seem so alluring. However, we must not give in. God knows what we are experiencing, and He will help us in our struggles. When you are tempted, turn to Him for strength!
Prayer
Dear Heavenly Father, I acknowledge that I need to feast more on the Bread of Life. Help me to become more disciplined in my study of your Word so that I can defend myself when temptation comes my way. Instill in me a new hunger and a fresh curiosity of Your wisdom and instructions. Bless me with a spirit of tenacity and perseverance to overcome any challenge that I face today. In Jesus's name I pray. Amen.
