Inspiration
This is the great prayer Jesus prayed before he went to the Garden of Gethsemane, where he would be arrested, beginning a process leading to His crucifixion and resurrection. It appeared to these disciples that Jesus was abandoning them. They felt frightened, helpless, alone, and unable to comprehend what was happening. They could not see that our Lord was introducing them to a better and higher relationship with the Holy Father. Isn't this similar to how we feel? It's scary when God leads us to change. It seems as if we are losing everything we once held dear. It is hard for us to comprehend that God is simply leading us to a higher, newer, and greater relationship with Him. Like these disciples, we are frightened and fearful when we don't know what is going to happen. There are so many things Jesus could pray for the disciples, such as guiding them, teaching them, or strengthening them. Instead, He sums it up in two simple words: keep them. The prayer of Jesus is that His disciples be kept in God's name and that they all be unified in purpose within the church, the body of Christ, for the glory of God. It is still the Lord's desire for His disciples today. We are the strongest of all unions when we are united in harmony and love, as are the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
Prayer
Dear Heavenly Father, keep me close to you at all times and protect me from the evils in this world. Thank You for giving us Your Son, Jesus Christ, through whom we can be united with You. Help me bring harmony and love to my relationships, my community, and everything I'm in contact with today. Lord, let Your Spirit dwell in our hearts and unite us in this lost world. Anything is possible with you. In Jesus's name I pray. Amen.
